JANUARY 2021

January was a pretty good month.  The weather was half-way decent and I was able to get a lot done.

The first piece that I finished was the bird bath called "Riding the Wave".

It is Indiana Limestone, measuring approx. 24" high x 28" x 19" and was finished on 1-12-21

Here's the back view.

This is a small Alabama Marble piece that I finished next.

It measures 18"H x 10" x 5" and weighs 21 lbs.  signed 1-14-21

Most of the month's effort was on this large floral bird bath.

2020 At A Glance

Most of my studio time this last year was committed to finishing a project that started in 2011. It is called "Now" and was carved from a 35,000 lb. block of Indiana Limestone that measured 9' tall by 6' wide by 4' thick.

I've included 4 corner views to give an accurate sense of the entire piece.

Below are 3 views of the piece that I worked on when I couldn't work outside on "Now".  I spent about 3 months in total working on a commission of an Eagle for a friend who lives in Tallahassee, Florida.

The images below are garden- sized sculptures - in the order that they were made.  Considering what an awful year it's been, it comes as a shock when I realized that all of these pieces have sold.

She Sail

 Below are 4 large sculptures that are works-in-progress.  All I need is a crane to set them upright before I can continue.

This is "Darkest Before the Dawn" which is a functional seating sculpture.  It measures 8' x 2-1/2' x 2' and started with a 6,000 lb. block.

This is "One Way or Another" which is also a functional sculpture.  The block at the top was cut out from this piece with a hydraulic chainsaw.  It will become "Go With the Flow" - another functional sculpture.  The original block weighed 10,000 lb. and measured 8' x 4' x 2'..  The bottom sculpture still retains those measurements, but the top piece only measures 5' x 2' x 2'.

This sculpture, which has been renamed to "Star Seed", is completely finished now and only needs a crane to turn the top piece upright and then pin it to the base.

That sums up the sculpture production this last year.  I have no idea how 2021 will unfold.
 

Eagle commission and "She Sail" stone vessel

Finally!! I'm all but finished with the Eagle commission that I started last summer.  It is 38" high by 24" wide by 12" thick and weighs about 350 lbs.  I've got a RIDICULOUS amount of labor and effort in this sculpture.  I'm happy with the end result, but it was outside of my comfort zone, to say the least.  This was a tough one.

Now that this piece is out of the studio, I am able to get onto other projects.  Below, is the first effort that I call "She Sail", Indiana Limestone, 38" long x 12" high by 12" wide and about 100 lbs.

If the winter isn't too harsh, I hope that I'll be able to make more pieces.  If it's below freezing, (like today) then I'll spend my time making new designs in clay or drawings for next season.

Let's hope 2021 is an improvement over 2020
